DIY Rose Ribbon Hair Clip

Sep 19, 2022

Flower hair clips are popular in bridal wear, but I found women wearing them anytime in the warmer months as well.  They're not only reserved for bridal occasions but can be worn when you feel like adding a little femininity to your hairstyle.

For this project, I used wire trimmed ribbon because that was the only wide ribbon I had in my stash at the time.  You can use any kind of ribbon you want if the width is wide enough.  On to the tutorial!

Materials Needed:

  • 1 yard of 1-1/2" wide ribbon
  • Matching Color Thread
  • Matching Color Felt
  • Hot Glue Gun

1.  Start with your ribbon.

2. Sew a straight stitch near the edge of the ribbon.  Leave the thread tails long at each end.

3.  Pull the end of the thread tails to gather the ribbon.

4.  Your ribbon strand should look like this after gathering.

5.  Start rolling the end together to form the "rose bud".

6.  Tie a knot in your thread and thread your hand needle.  Start by placing the needle in the center of the bud.  This is where we'll start our hand sewing.

7.  Continue to wrap the ribbon and sew the edges together as you wrap.

8. Continue wrapping and sewing until you come to the end of the ribbon. Finish by knotting the end.

9.  Cut a small circle of felt the same color as the ribbon to use as your base for the flower. Hand sew the felt piece underneath the flower as shown.

10.  Take a hot glue gun and squeeze a small strip of glue on the back of your clip.  Attach the clip to the felt quickly because it dries fast! In my pic above, you will not see the glue coming out because I had to put the camera down to glue and act fast.

11. Let it dry for a few minutes.  Your rose is ready to wear!

I hope you enjoyed this easy tutorial!  Whenever you feel the need to embellish your updo or hairstyle this accessory is the perfect addition. Have a great day and happy sewing!
