Many spaghetti straps are on the long side and may not be adjustable. In this tutorial, I'll show you how to shorten straps on a dress with no lining. This can also apply to any unlined top with spaghetti straps. I had this knit homecoming dress that needed the straps shortened by 2-3/4". Easy peasy!
This is the back of the dress finished.
Front finished.
During the fitting, I pulled in the straps so they were comfortable enough. I then attached my trusty sewing clips to hold it in place. I just love these clips!
The clip remained on and when I was ready to do the alteration, I pinched where the strap is holding it in place.
Released the clip and kept holding the strap.
I marked the edge of the strap with a safety pin. This is the new placement of the strap.
I let go and measured the distance from the pin to the new placement. I do this to make sure the other strap is even in length.
Now that I marked the strap, I placed another safety pin to mark the strap placement at the base as shown. (so I don't lose my place) I removed all the original stitches that were holding the strap down.
I moved the strap down to where the safety pin meets the top edge. Pinned the strap down to get it ready for sewing.
I removed the safety pins and kept the straight pin in. I sewed a few rows of straight stitches back and forth.
Cut off the excess strap.
Finally, I sewed another few rows of stitches to hold the edge in place. All done!
Hope you enjoyed this very easy tutorial! Thank you for visiting and have a great day!
